Barefoot Walking For Your Health!

walking-barefootGo barefoot for your health”  suggests Dr. Michael Mezernich in his new book, titled ” The Brain That Changes Itself”.

The author thinks that wearing shoes and socks all our lives is partly responsible for decreasing of our physical stability as we age. The book explains how your feet are cleverly hardwired to your brain and  why this two way connection is very important. And,

Personally, I love going barefoot.  There is nothing more wonderful than the feel of green grass or sand on the feet. I grew up when life was simple and natural. As a kid it was normal to go outside and play in our bare feet. I remember the feel of the grass on my feet and the fun of jumping in a pool of water barefoot.

I used to spend entire summers barefoot. When I was eight, I could have told you how long it had been since rain from the viscosity of the mud that pushed between my toes.

I  could do it easily because  I spent hours playing in the wetland next to my house. I don’t know if I could tell you that now, though I’m certain I could learn again.

Going barefoot is like going for back-to-basics, simple and natural ways of living – going green, so to speak.

The ‘padding’ that footwear provides makes your feet less sensitive and less responsive to the subtle changes in terrain and textures as you walk along.

Your brain is being deprived of important stimulus from your feet and over time that part of your brain is becoming less able to cope with stability and you are more likely to stumble.

Every human is born without shoes. Our feet were designed to do what they do.  Comprised of 28 bones, our feet are extremely subtle machines . And, their flexibility and ease of motion no shoe can rival.

Human feet are not designed to be encased in shoes. The evidence that human feet are designed to be bare includes, but is not limited to;

  • 250,000 sweat glands for cooling.
  • More nerve endings on the soles of our feet, than any other area of the human body, indicates that being able to touch and feel the ground is highly important.

The shape of shoes, even modern running shoes, corresponds more with popular fashion, than with the actual shape of a healthy human foot. Shoes deform natural and healthy feet.

“Shoes often protect the feet so much that certain foot muscles get lazy because they’re not being used,” said James DeMarco, running coach and sports store owner.

Your Prescription:

Spend much less time wearing your shoes and go barefoot for your health at least three times a day.

Have a wonderful barefoot day!
