Super Herb Oregano. Strong in Antioxidants. Strong Antiviral & Antibacterial. Strong In Fiber.
There’s a very practical reason to grow herbs in your garden—they taste great. And they’re also a bargain, because even if you can find top quality fresh herbs for sale, they’ll probably cost you a pretty penny.
The few times I succumbed to those expensive, tiny plastic packages of so called ‘fresh’ herbs at the supermarket, the experience almost killed me—especially when I was buying something I often have growing in profusion, like dill.
When you grow perennial herbs such as oregano, rosemary, thyme, and chives, your initial plant or seed purchase will often reward you for years to come.
If you’ve only used dried oregano in cooking, I urge you to get yourself some of the fresh stuff, and fast. There’s no comparison when it comes to flavor, and when using fresh herbs that are stemmy like oregano and thyme, you can use just the leaves in your cooking.
Much of the oregano plant is stem, and because dried herbs are usually made from the entire plant, you’re often paying for—and eating—a lot of stems.
Oregano is prized not only for its strong flavor and pleasant aroma, but for its health benefits as well. And,
The herb is known to have strong antibacterial properties, perhaps as a result of the volatile oils the herb contains. Some of these volatile oils include thymol and carvacrol.
Both of these substances have been shown to inhibit the growth of many kinds of bacteria, including some that cause serious food borne illnesses.
As a matter of fact, ounce for ounce oregano is thought to be one of the most antioxidant dense of all foods.
Oregano has antioxidant properties. Studies have shown that the anti-oxidant properties of oregano may even exceed that of apples and blueberries.
Antioxidant vitamins are thought to play a vital role in the prevention of many forms of cancer, as well as perhaps slowing down the aging process. That is the main reason you should grow herbs in your garden.
Oregano is rich in fiber (the amount is similar to chicory). Fiber is necessary to provide bulk for better elimination.
Fresh oregano like other leafy vegetables is loaded with vitamins and nutrients. It is a good source of iron and manganese as well as calcium, vitamin C, and vitamin A. It also has omega-3 fatty acids.
Oregano is good in maintaining the respiratory health. And, it can help increase menstrual flow.
When given in the form of a warm infusion, oregano relieves muscle spasms and cramps, colic, or spasmodic pains in the abdomen.
The dried leaves can also be applied in bags as a warm application to painful arthritic swellings and other conditions, including rheumatism.
Oregano herb goes well with tomato sauces, lamb, cruciform vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, etc), as well as zucchini and of course about any pizza.
Other spices that go with oregano are garlic, parsley, sage, thyme, pepper, basil, and dried onions.
Oregano means “mountain joy” and is a wonderfully aromatic, flavorful herb widely used in Spanish and Mediterranean cooking. Oregano leaves retain their flavor better in hot dishes if added toward the end of cooking.
Heating too long results in bitterness. Dried oregano has a stronger taste than fresh.
Oregano is one of the healthiest and tastiest herbs you can try.
